Before you start
A Shopify store whose theme you can edit, and the free Brane app to answer from. Shopify does not let you edit the code of a paid theme you are still trialling, so buy it first. Then duplicate your theme (Online Store, Themes, then the three dots and Duplicate) so you can switch back in one click if you need to.

Get your chat code
Open the live chat code builder, enter your Brane username, pick your colours and click Copy code.

Open your theme code
In your Shopify admin go to Online Store, then Themes. Next to your current theme click the three dots, then Edit code.

Paste it into theme.liquid
Open theme.liquid in the Layout folder, find the closing </body> tag near the bottom and paste your code on the line above it. Click Save.

Check your store
Open your store in a new tab. The chat button is in the corner, and every message arrives in the Brane app on your phone.
The code
This is the whole install. Swap yourbrand for your Brane username, or make your own with your colours in the code builder.
On every store page. theme.liquid wraps your home page, collections, product pages and cart, so the chat follows shoppers around.
Light on your store. The script loads nothing else until a shopper opens the chat, and defer keeps your pages fast.
Easy to undo. Delete the line, or switch back to the copy of your theme.

No. Brane is one line of code in your theme, so there is nothing to install from the Shopify App Store, no permissions to approve and no monthly app fee.
Yes. The chat and the Brane app are free, with no paid plan and no limit on conversations.
No. They enter their email address and date of birth in the chat and start talking, without leaving your store. If they have gone by the time you reply, your answer is emailed to them.
No. Shopify's checkout is separate from your theme, so the chat shows on your store pages but not during checkout.
The code lives in your theme, so paste the same line into the new theme's theme.liquid before you publish it.
