Before you start

What you need

Squarespace includes Code Injection on its Core, Plus and Advanced plans and some older plans such as Business and Commerce. The Basic plan does not, and moving down to Basic switches injected code off. You also need the free Brane app to answer from.

Add live chat to Squarespace in five minutes

1

Get your chat code
Open the live chat code builder, enter your Brane username, pick your colours and click Copy code.

2

Open Code Injection
In the Pages panel scroll down to Custom Code and click Code Injection.

3

Paste it into Footer
Paste your code into the Footer field, which Squarespace places before the closing </body> tag on every page. Click Save.

4

Check your live site
Open your site in a new tab. The chat button is in the corner, and every message arrives in the Brane app on your phone.

The code

One line in the Footer field

This is the whole install. Swap yourbrand for your Brane username, or make your own with your colours in the code builder.

Every page at once. The Footer field reaches every page of your site, so the chat follows visitors around.

Light on your site. The script loads nothing else until a visitor opens the chat, and defer keeps your pages fast.

Easy to undo. Delete the line from the Footer field and save.

<script src="https://embed.brane.chat/embed.js"
        data-user="yourbrand"
        defer></script>

Paste it into Code Injection, Footer.

Squarespace live chat questions

Which Squarespace plans can add live chat?

Any plan that includes Code Injection: Core, Plus and Advanced, and some older plans such as Business and Commerce. Basic does not include it.

Can I use a Code Block instead?

Use Code Injection. A Code Block adds code to one spot on one page, while the Footer field puts the chat button on every page.

I cannot find Code Injection. Where has it gone?

Squarespace has moved it more than once. In the current layout it is in the Pages panel under Custom Code. If your plan does not include it, it will not be there at all.

Is it really free?

Yes. The chat and the Brane app are free, with no paid plan and no limit on conversations. The only cost is a Squarespace plan that includes Code Injection.

Do visitors need to install anything?

No. They enter their email address and date of birth in the chat and start talking on your site. If they have left by the time you reply, your answer is emailed to them.
